Take a moment and look at your Outdoor Classroom with fresh eyes. Step back and walk into your outdoor space as a child would during a cold winter day. Does this space entice you to learn as it did during the warmer months? How can our outdoor environments be the third teacher during the winter months?

Winter is defined as,” the coldest season of the year in polar and temperate climates, between autumn and spring. Winter is caused by the axis of the Earth in that hemisphere being oriented away from the Sun.” We all may associate winter with snow, rain, sleet, clouds, and freezing temperatures. Instead of hibernating indoors this winter, get inspired by the weather and make a weather station.

Make a Winter Weather Station:

1. Introduction the topic with a Weather book

2. Ask Questions: What is a Meteorologist?  What tools do you need to study weather?

3. Get Active: Make tools to study weather (stay tuned to see my creations!)

• Hygrometer: measures humidity
• Rain Guage: measures rain
• Thermometer: measures temperature
• Barometer: measures air pressure
• Anemometer: measures wind speed
• Weather Vane: tells you which way the wind is blowing

4. Put it all Together: Create a Winter Weather Station
